{"id":1618,"date":"2015-12-03T05:00:37","date_gmt":"2015-12-03T13:00:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/?p=1618"},"modified":"2017-05-18T10:48:54","modified_gmt":"2017-05-18T17:48:54","slug":"why-mail-merges-5x-better-marketo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/why-mail-merges-5x-better-marketo\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Mail Merges Are 5x Better Than Marketo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if you could get your outbound sales emails seen by 5x more people just by making one simple change?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re sending your (cold, not &#8220;opted-in&#8221;) prospecting emails using marketing automation software like Marketo, simply sending those emails with a mail merge via Gmail might <strong>increase your open rate by 5x<\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of my email consulting clients was sending their cold sales emails using Marketo, and had an <\/span><b>open rate of about 8% when we started<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Before we created the copy for their new email campaign, I insisted that they switched to sending their sales emails through mail merges instead of Marketo. They soon saw their <\/span><b>open rates shoot up to 53-66%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on average. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While I often tell people to not obsess too much about open rates and optimizing their subject lines, having open rates\u00a0<\/span><b>below 35% is a strong indicator of deliverability issues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that needs to be immediately fixed. It is important to have a highly targeted email list with low bounce rates and have thoughtful subject lines. However, just changing<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you\u2019re sending your emails can <strong>dramatically increase open rates, <\/strong>and therefore also increase response rates by\u00a0getting your message in front of more eyeballs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I recently wrote a blog post explaining the basics of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.salesfolk.com\/blog\/how-to-avoid-going-to-spam\">email deliverability and how to avoid going to spam<\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0Following that post, I had some questions about switching out dirty mail server IPs for new \u201cclean ones,\u201d as well as other questions about services like SendGrid, and so I decided to write another post to explain more about deliverability.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why You Never Want to \u201cGo Cheap\u201d With Your Mail Servers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No one wants their alcoholic uncle to embarrass them in front of their colleagues at the company Christmas party by getting plastered and making a huge scene. The reputation of your mail server\u2019s IP is even more fragile than your own, and each time an email that&#8217;s sent from your IP bounces or gets marked as spam, your IP\u2019s reputation and trust decreases.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re trying to cut costs and send emails from an <strong>undedicated mail server IP<\/strong>, you\u2019re running the risk of having your IP tarnished by any \u201cdrunk uncle\u201d that goes on a spamming spree using your shared IP. Most users of Marketo and other marketing automation software share their IPs with the lowest common denominator of spammers. This means your good emails get to pay for their sins, and no matter how many good emails you send, that IP\u2019s trust can be destroyed by their crummy spam.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same goes for those who are using the cheap, basic version of SendGrid. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/sendgrid-pricing1.png\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1624\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/sendgrid-pricing1-1024x586.png\" alt=\"sendgrid pricing email deliverability\" width=\"579\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/sendgrid-pricing1-1024x586.png 1024w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/sendgrid-pricing1-300x172.png 300w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/sendgrid-pricing1.png 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 579px) 100vw, 579px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notice the difference in pricing between &#8220;Essentials&#8221; and the &#8220;Pro&#8221; version? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can send 100,000 emails with SendGrid for only $19.95 a month with no dedicated IP, or you pay $79.95 for the same volume of emails, but with your own private IPs. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The price difference is 4x higher for a dedicated IP, but your <\/span><b>deliverability might be 5x higher or more with a dedicated IP to send from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1535\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/impersonal-cold-email-like-a-robot.jpg\" alt=\"marketo feels mass\" width=\"277\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/impersonal-cold-email-like-a-robot.jpg 350w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/impersonal-cold-email-like-a-robot-300x278.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 277px) 100vw, 277px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Just Buying A New \u201cClean\u201d IP Won\u2019t Fix Deliverability Problems<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So you can just buy a new \u201cclean\u201d IP from a service like SendGrid, and you don\u2019t have to worry about email reputation or deliverability problems anymore, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrong.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every new mail server IP starts out with a <strong>neutral reputation of zero<\/strong>. So, even if you decide to set up your own mail server, that new server\u2019s reputation will be much lower than if you used Gmail. \u00a0This decreases your chances of inboxing. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are highly competent with mail servers and email reputation, you could spend months \u201c<\/span><b>warming up\u201d your mail server\u2019s trust and reputation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by sending out thousands and thousands of emails that don\u2019t bounce or get marked as spam. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So either you buy and manage your own dedicated mail server with zero reputation or you&#8217;re stuck sharing a dirty mail server with terrible reputation. In both scenarios,\u00a0<\/span><b>you won&#8217;t be able to inbox as well as Gmail can.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because Gmail&#8217;s mail servers have an amazing reputation, sending your emails directly through a mail merge in Google Apps (<em>or some other sales automation software that plugs into Gmail and automates this process for you<\/em>) has the <strong>highest deliverability<\/strong>. Google does limit how many emails you can send each day through one account, but this is because they want to protect their own mail servers&#8217; trust.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Important Information:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s important to recognize that your reputation is NOT based on your email address&#8217; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">domain,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since that can easily be changed. The only thing that affects reputation is what email server you&#8217;re sending from. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><b>Gmail Mail Merges Are The Easiest Solution And Have the Best Email Deliverability<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While you might not be able to blast out thousands of emails a day through a single Gmail account, using mail merge with Gmail is the easiest way to achieve high email deliverability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re doing your outbound prospecting correctly, it should be targeted enough to get somewhere between a <\/span><b>10-35% response rate from your outbound campaign<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When each of your salespeople gets that kind of response rate, you don\u2019t need to do crazy volume of outbound emails in order to get a response rate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost every time an organization tells me that they can\u2019t send enough volume through Gmail to meet their sales quota, I know they\u2019re probably doing a lot of things wrong. You shouldn\u2019t need to<\/span><b> send 10,000 emails in order to get 11 responses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from your leads. I can send an email campaign to a <\/span><b>list of 100 leads and easily get 20-40 responses<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u00a0So in sending 1\/100 of the same volume as that company, I can get <strong>2-4x their response rate<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of this is deliverability, part of this is effective targeting, and part of this is having great copy in my cold emails. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What it really comes down to is taking a more careful and thoughtful approach to doing outbound sales prospecting, rather than taking a careless scattershot approach, and praying that brute-force somehow magically works.
