For every enticing message that lays out clear benefits and asks helpful questions, there are 10 that commit email crimes like laziness, being too self-focused, or asking us to do all the work.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While it would be nice to never get emails like these at all, they do offer some great real-world lessons for salespeople, marketers, and anyone interested in attracting customers over email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As part of our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/hall-of-shame\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">SalesFolk Hall of Shame<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we\u2019ve collected some of the most offensive cold email personalities to grace our inboxes recently, and called them out for their crimes. For a lesson in what not to do, read on:<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">1. The Flatterer<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Email Crimes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> insincerity, false flattery<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2577\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hos1.jpg\" alt=\"The Flatterer\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hos1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hos1-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imitation is not always flattery. This person uses one of\u00a0Heather&#8217;s old cold email templates from a few years back, but completely butchers it. \u201cQuick question\u201d is way overused as a subject line now, and it\u2019s also misleading, since the message that follows is anything but quick. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And speaking of flattery: this person needs a lesson in how to make it sound convincing. The opening pleasantry screams of false concern. The paragraph that follows it is nothing more than a thinly disguised setup for the sender\u2019s real intentions, which is to talk about their creative agency. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If given the choice, I would rather someone drop me three lines of text asking outright if I need creative services, rather than assume I\u2019m not smart enough to see through fake niceties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2547\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/tenor.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"498\" height=\"199\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">2. The Entitled Recruiter<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Email Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laziness, creating extra work<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2549\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EntitledRecruiter.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EntitledRecruiter.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/EntitledRecruiter-300x214.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Occasionally, we get excited about a cold email and include too many asks in one message. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This email goes to new extremes. The sender doesn\u2019t just accidentally include a long CTA or one too many questions. They expect the recipient to complete multiple steps in order to even get to the so-called benefit: read this job description; reply if they\u2019re interested; reply if they\u2019re not interested; submit names of other potential candidates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long story short, the sender wants the recipient to do the work. They clearly haven\u2019t properly researched relevant candidates, and instead, expect that and all other useful information to come from others. This is the sort of email that won\u2019t just annoy people; it could outright offend them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2569\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/tumblr_mp5srhYMeD1s9ijcbo1_500.gif\" alt=\"Entitiled\" width=\"500\" height=\"211\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">3. The Slacker<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Email Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">laziness, lack of research<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2554\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HallOfShame3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HallOfShame3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HallOfShame3-300x213.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This one reads like it was written at 5 p.m. on a Friday when the sender realized they were a few outbound emails short of their weekly requirement. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everything in here could apply to just about any recipient, whether that\u2019s a VP of B2B Software Sales or someone working at the Nike flagship store. Seriously, what company doesn\u2019t prospect or do lead generation? Who doesn\u2019t want to \u201crapidly grow their sales?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On top of that, the text is full of obvious typos and grammatical errors that add an extra layer of unprofessionalism. One glance at this message, and people will move on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2555\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/anigif_enhanced-buzz-28337-1380305742-16.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"420\" height=\"224\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">4. The Marketing Bot<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Email Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of personalization, marketing disguised as sales<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2558\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS4Revised.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"596\" height=\"428\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS4Revised.jpg 596w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS4Revised-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 596px) 100vw, 596px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This would be a relatively inoffensive message\u2014if the sender had simply made it a marketing promotion instead of trying to convince me it\u2019s a cold sales email. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Besides covering way too much information for one email, this message completely lacks the kind of personal touches that make cold email successful. There are no benefits, just a gratuitous feature list. And using \u201cHeather R\u201d in the name field immediately gives away the game: I\u2019m one of probably 1,000 names scraped out of a CRM and thrown into a marketing-automation tool.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is definitely a time and place for marketing promotions. As part of a cold email campaign isn\u2019t one of them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro tip: always clean up your CRM data before you send your messages.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2560\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Dwight.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"247\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">5. The Jargon Specialist<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Email Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vague, relies on jargon, sloppy<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2561\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS5-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCRM Specialist\u201d definitely pops up on LinkedIn now and then as an actual job title\u2014but that doesn\u2019t mean we should go around using it with total strangers. The phrase is business jargon at its finest: vague, pretentious, and not descriptive of any real job at a company. Presumably, anyone using a CRM in their day-to-day work is a kind of specialist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rest of the message is just as vague. It doesn\u2019t tell me why this mysterious candidate might be a good fit for my company or what skills they can bring to the ones I already employ. Finally, the text is messy, with bland, redundant wording and a couple of typos that should never wind up in any kind of email, cold or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2563\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/tenor-2.gif\" alt=\"Jargon\" width=\"498\" height=\"209\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">6. The Desperate Wannabe<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Email Crimes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> trying too hard, too much information<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2565\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS6.jpg\" alt=\"The Wannabe\" width=\"600\" height=\"429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS6.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/HoS6-300x215.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This person really, really wants to come off as one of those warm, bubbly types you just can\u2019t help but reply to. But a salutation that reads \u201cHey!\u201d just screams that the sender wants to appear chill when they are actually desperate for a response. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there are the multiple links to promotional materials, along with three different CTAs that aren\u2019t so much about my taking action as they are about the sender wanting to seem cheerful. Had they spent more time cleaning up run-on sentences and outlining why I could benefit from animation videos, I might have been more interested in the product.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2567\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/anigif_sub-buzz-11655-1474624835-2.gif\" alt=\"Wannabes\" width=\"500\" height=\"279\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Seen any other cringeworthy cold email stereotypes that deserve a place in our Hall of Shame roundup?
