Here\u2019s a thought: if you\u2019ve ever committed one of the six cold email sins below, avoid repeating those mistakes in the future.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These email personalities showcase a variety of problems\u2014self-obsession, laziness, ridiculously long messages\u2014but they have one thing in common. They do nothing to make the reader feel valued. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Making a recipient feel like 1 of 1,000 is\u00a0a surefire\u00a0way to turn them off. Sometimes, this is unintentional, like <a href=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/glassdoors-latest-emails-show-how-careless-writing-can-ruin-sales-conversations\/\">forgetting to personalize a message<\/a>. Other times, it\u2019s blatant and obnoxious, such as outlining your thoughts on random topics that have nothing to do with the sender\u2019s business. And sometimes,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/never-use-bullet-points-sales-prospecting-emails\/\">pointless\u00a0formatting is to blame<\/a>. Whatever the reason, these messages are perfect examples of how lack of focus on the sender will ruin an email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Without further ado, here are our latest Hall of Shame personas to avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">1. The Mad Libber<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Crimes:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> infomercial-quality writing, zero personalization<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2670 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHallofShame_1.jpg\" alt=\"January Hall of Shame 1\" width=\"600\" height=\"553\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHallofShame_1.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHallofShame_1-300x277.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a bunch of issues with this email (copy errors, features instead of benefits), but what really stands out is its overly general, infomercial-like quality. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lines like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c. . . we take the time, headache, and frustration out of finding a business loan . . .\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sound as if they belong on a roadside billboard\u2014or in a book of Mad Libs, with certain words removed: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cwe take the [noun], [noun], and [noun] out of [verb ending in ing] a <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">business loan<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the intended market here is more general than a TV audience from the 1990s. The email assumes pretty much any business has cashflow problems, then offers a list of features that address substantially different financial needs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extra-general sentences and information is perfect when you\u2019re Mad Libbing around the Christmas tree with family. When it comes to cold email, it\u2019s a one-way ticket to the trash.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2648\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/tumblr_og39r3Ror51qhub34o3_500.gif\" alt=\"The Mad Libber\" width=\"500\" height=\"239\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Mr. Robot<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stiff language, vague requests and benefits<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2672 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_2.jpg\" alt=\"January Hall of Shame 2\" width=\"600\" height=\"324\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_2.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_2-300x162.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This email is all about asking me for things without revealing anything about who the sender is, what they do, or where my proposed article would eventually wind up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The vagueness doesn\u2019t stop there, though. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was made aware of your blog post here\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only directs me to a website of marketing links and no mention of SalesFolk anywhere. Then there\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c . . . publish blogs that are related to the business industry.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Business is not an industry, technically. Even if you bent that rule, you\u2019d still be left wondering which aspect of business this sender is referring to. Sales? Writing? Shoe manufacturing? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Personal pet peeve: the sentence length here is almost perfectly uniform, which suggests Siri actually wrote this email. If you want to keep your reader\u2019s attention, vary sentence length to keep the flow natural.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2649\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/tumblr_o9txs6bpjz1qh0cdto1_500.gif\" alt=\"Mr. Robot\" width=\"500\" height=\"278\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. The\u00a0Disaster<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">misleading copy, poor grammar, sloppy style\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2673 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_3.jpg\" alt=\"January Hall of Shame 3\" width=\"600\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_3.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_3-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Under no circumstances should you ever kick off a cold email by joking about a religious figure. And that\u2019s the lightest of this email\u2019s crimes. More concerning is the complete mess that makes up the rest of the copy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s no consistent punctuation to speak of, only a jumble of commas and colons. Lines like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, we are not trying to sell anything, no we don\u2019t have any other schemes up our sleeves, please bear with me 1 more second of your time\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> make me think the sender did a brain dump straight into the email and never\u00a0followed it with a proofread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking of \u201cno schemes up our sleeves,\u201d this entire email is a scheme, just a badly masked one. It\u2019s totally trying to push something on me (getting my feedback), despite claims to the contrary. Though, honestly, I don\u2019t think this person meant to be deceptive. This email is more a case of disorganized thoughts, poor copy, and too many ideas packed into a single message. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2652\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/tumblr_mo745g1Dhm1rw6ofvo1_500.gif\" alt=\"The Disaster\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b style=\"font-family: -apple-system, BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Segoe UI', Roboto, Oxygen-Sans, Ubuntu, Cantarell, 'Helvetica Neue', sans-serif;\">4. The Pretender<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">empty sentences, no benefits, potentially misleading claims<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2674 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_4.jpg\" alt=\"January Hall of Shame 4\" width=\"600\" height=\"368\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_4.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_4-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pretender is a cousin to <a href=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/6-cold-email-crimes-that-will-land-your-message-and-reputation-in-the-trash\/\">The Slacker<\/a>\u2014they never put much effort into their cold emails. But unlike their cousin, who doesn\u2019t care what you think, The Pretender really wants you to believe they\u2019ve gone above and beyond for you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like most pretenders, this one doesn\u2019t do a very good job of masking their laziness. The message is full of empty, obvious information (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI would love to introduce myself\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). The subject line speaks for itself in terms of quality. And the message also promises me a list of technical errors on my site, but gives no clues as to what those errors might be. I\u2019m inclined to believe the 12-page doc promised doesn\u2019t actually exist yet, and that\u00a0it&#8217;s mentioned in the email because that sounds nice. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In cold email, where you have seconds to capture a person\u2019s attention, every single word counts. Set aside time for checking your work\u2014often more than once\u2014before you send it out. When someone\u2019s too lazy to take those steps, it usually shows.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>PS: What&#8217;s with the green line of text in the middle?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2654\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1481213164.gif\" alt=\"The Pretender\" width=\"500\" height=\"250\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>5.\u00a0Ms.\u00a0Vain<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Crimes: <\/b>long-winded, self-focused<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2675 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_5.jpg\" alt=\"January Hall of Shame 5\" width=\"600\" height=\"655\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_5.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_5-275x300.jpg 275w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This email should be about a quarter of the length it is currently. But when you spend a bunch of time talking about yourself, the words are bound to pile up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only parts of this email acknowledging my existence is that the sender came across us and that we\u2019re invited pay a lot of money to test out their service. I can buy a farming robot for my backyard for $3,000; why would I spend that money on someone who doesn\u2019t take the time to ask me why I might need their PR services? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s great that this particular company has gotten accolades from some high-profile publications. That isn\u2019t the same thing as including good social proof, which, in cold email, uses past success stories and stats to entice the potential customer. Listing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NYT <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wired<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in this context only makes the email sound more self-obsessed, and is as empty as telling someone you came across their company.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2656\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/anigif_enhanced-8424-1455278040-3.gif\" alt=\"Vain\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>6. Clueless<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Crimes: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">random, irrelevant information, hypocrisy <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2676\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_6.jpg\" alt=\"January Hall of Shame 6\" width=\"600\" height=\"1159\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_6.jpg 600w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_6-155x300.jpg 155w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/JanuaryHoS_6-530x1024.jpg 530w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Part of the trouble here is the email\u2019s length: it\u2019s the digital equivalent of the guy at the party who won\u2019t stop talking about himself. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even half as long, this message would still come off as obnoxious and self obsessed. Because like the guy at the party, who will talk about anything just to hear the sound of his own voice, this sender strings a bunch of unrelated topics into an email without any apparent purpose. What do cryptocurrencies, digital spreadsheets, and a forthcoming book have in common? I don\u2019t know, based on this email.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finally, the email ends with \u201cnetworking advice\u201d and an instruction to \u201cstay focused.\u201d You\u2019ve heard the mantra <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">practice what you preach<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?
