{"id":819,"date":"2015-01-21T05:00:05","date_gmt":"2015-01-21T13:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/salesfolk.com\/?p=819"},"modified":"2016-07-14T00:12:57","modified_gmt":"2016-07-14T07:12:57","slug":"why-every-outbound-campaign-needs-8-emails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/why-every-outbound-campaign-needs-8-emails\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Every Outbound Campaign Needs 8 Emails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Just sending your prospecting list one or two cold emails is not enough.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re sending any less than 8 emails in your outbound campaign, you\u2019re likely missing out on the opportunity to set up dozens of appointments with qualified leads from your list.<\/p>\n<p>Recently we helped <a href=\"https:\/\/ambition.com\/\">Ambition<\/a>, a cool YC startup that helps businesses gamify their sales to increase productivity, with their outbound email campaign to help them crush their Q4 numbers. Using our cold email copy and email automation software to load their prospecting list, Ambition was able to get <b>73 responses from new leads, with\u00a023 of those responses coming\u00a0from emails 6-8<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>To learn more about the premise behind the engagement, you can read <a href=\"http:\/\/salesfolk.com\/ambition-got-72-replies-b2b-cold-email-campaign\/\">our recent blog post<\/a>, but here\u2019s an overview of what happened:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Ambition built a list of 578 prospects (<b>291 VP\/Directors of sales and 287 VP\/Directors of Sales Operations<\/b>)<\/li>\n<li>We created 4 email campaigns (<b>2 campaigns for each sales persona<\/b>), each with 8 email touchpoints per campaign, totaling 32 unique cold emails.<\/li>\n<li>There were some bounces in the first few initial touches (<b>81 in all 4 campaigns<\/b>), so we removed those contacts from the list.<\/li>\n<li>End result: <b>73 responses from Ambition\u2019s leads<\/b><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Because I&#8217;m a HUGE game theory nerd, here\u2019s a visualization of what the process behind our campaign looked like: <a href=\"http:\/\/salesfolk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Ambition-Salesfolk-Outbound-Case-study.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-825\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Ambition-Salesfolk-Outbound-Case-study.jpg\" alt=\"game theory for outbound campaign \" width=\"402\" height=\"643\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Ambition-Salesfolk-Outbound-Case-study.jpg 500w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/Ambition-Salesfolk-Outbound-Case-study-187x300.jpg 187w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 402px) 100vw, 402px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The reason for setting up the campaign like this instead of just writing 8 email touches for all 578 emails is that every email campaign should be specifically written for a clear persona. In this case, Ambition has 2 personas: VP\/Director of Sales and VP\/Director of Sales Operations. While these roles are similar, they are not identical and therefore should not receive identical copy.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of splitting up each persona into 2 groups is so you can A\/B test different messaging to see what works better with your audience. In our campaigns we tested Ambition&#8217;s various value props and what psychologies resonated better (fear of loss, value add, competition, etc). Touch #6 has 5 responses and \u00a0Touch #8 has 3 responses, but Touch #1 only got 1 response. If Ambition had stopped emailing after only 4 touches, they would have missed out on 11 responses from their \u201cVP Sales: 1B Campaign.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the chart below, look at how many responses Ambition got across each of their 8 touchpoints:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/salesfolk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ambition-case-study-response-rate-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-822\" src=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ambition-case-study-response-rate-1.jpg\" alt=\"Ambition outbound campaign stats 3\" width=\"485\" height=\"281\" srcset=\"https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ambition-case-study-response-rate-1.jpg 1055w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ambition-case-study-response-rate-1-300x173.jpg 300w, https:\/\/salesfolk.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/01\/ambition-case-study-response-rate-1-1024x592.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 485px) 100vw, 485px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If Ambition had quit sending emails after touchpoint #3, they would have missed out on 40 responses from their leads. That\u2019s over half of the total leads they got in their entire campaign.<\/p>\n<p>Looking at the stats above and dozens of other cold email campaigns we\u2019ve run, persistence definitely pays off for outbound email. However, you can\u2019t email people indefinitely either without seeming creepy or like a spammer.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why sending 8 emails is typically the magic number because it\u2019s just persistent enough without being too irritating. (But you should always test to see what works best for you and your industry!)<\/p>\n<p>Every email you send has a clear cost and benefit. While measuring the benefits of sending cold email is fairly straightforward in terms of generating warm conversations with qualified leads, the costs are a little more opaque.
