Bad sales emails can happen to anyone. That’s why it’s so important to stay vigilant when it comes to taking advice from the internet. There are lots and lots of tips out there that, despite being completely ineffective, are fast becoming gospel in the sales world.

The best way to avoid making mistakes that could ruin your email outreach is to know the difference between an actual best practice and a misleading tip

With that in mind, here are four popular tips that are actually bad for your sales emails, and what you can do instead.

Do you have any questions about other sales advice you’ve heard? Just ask in the comments, and I’ll try to respond directly or answer in my next video.

The Success of Your Sales Email Depends on How Well You Know Your Ideal Buyer

February 21, 2018 By Heather Leave a Comment

How do you know if a prospective customer will care about the sales email you send them? It helps if you’ve sketched out who your ideal buyer is before ever drafting that email.

These days, you need a crystal-clear idea of your ideal buyer and the ways your business can actually help them or add value to their lives.

But the old stereotypes of Marketing Mary or Procurement Pete are outdated and frequently inappropriate. Instead, anyone in sales or marketing needs to learn how to craft a buyer persona—that is, a detailed description of your ideal customer and why they’re qualified to buy from your company.

In this video, I explain why buyer personas are so important and how to create one to build up a strong prospecting list.

Managing a Remote Team? Make Sure You’re Doing These 4 Things

February 14, 2018 By Jennifer Marston Leave a Comment

Here’s a question that’s going to become more and more relevant over the next decade: How do you manage employees when you’re working with a remote team?

When I started SalesFolk, one of the first things I made sure to do was create definite ideas around how employees would communicate and collaborate remotely, whether with me or one another, in groups or one on one. Today, we have over 40 people working for the company, all of them completely comfortable with a culture that’s built on remote collaboration to get work done.

As more work moves online and more companies rely on a geographically distributed teams, managing remote work should be a priority, especially if your goal is to one day be a manager or executive.

So with that in mind, check out our latest video, which explores four things you can do to effectively manage remote teams.

Why You Should Never Use Bullet Points In Your Sales Prospecting Emails

January 16, 2018 By Heather Leave a Comment

I recently did a critique of a bad cold email that had a lot of bullet points and jargon.

I shared that video on various channels such as LinkedIn, and ended up getting over 20,000 views on the video in less than 24 hours, along with dozens of positive comments and engaging questions from people just like you. (Thanks for that if you watched the video, liked it, or commented!)

The LinkedIn Comments That Inspired My Next Video:

There were many questions and comments related to my critique of the use of “bullet points” in this particular email (that wasn’t the ONLY thing they did wrong). A lot of people said they didn’t know they weren’t supposed to use bullet points or had questions as to why they shouldn’t do that, etc.

Since it seemed to be a popular topic that a lot of people needed extra help with, I decided to make this next video about “bullet points and numbered lists.”

What This Cold Email Tips Video Covers:

The video you’re about to watch contains the following information:

  1. An explanation as to why you should NEVER include bullet points or numbered lists in your “sales prospecting emails” (cold emails).
  2. Data and findings from a SalesFolk Labs research study that backs up this claim, and attempts to analyze why this is.
  3. Advice for what to do instead of using bullet points or numbered lists, which can help you increase your positive response rate by 3-4x (or maybe even more, depending what’s in your original template!).

Watch The Video Below For Yourself:

If You Found This Video Helpful, Please Let Me Know! (And Ask Questions In The Comments)

I hope you enjoy this video and found it helpful. I’m going to be making a whole lot more videos like these this year, so if you have any questions or requests for future topics you’d like to see me cover, please include them in the comments, and I’ll try my best to answer on an upcoming video. Thanks! 🙂

The Magic Number of Follow-up Emails Every Salesperson Should Be Sending

January 10, 2018 By Heather Leave a Comment

People are always asking me how many follow-up emails they should be sending in order to maximize their chances of getting a positive response from a prospective customer (or whoever else they’re cold emailing). I’ve also seen a lot of sales and marketing organizations sending too few follow-up emails in their sales campaigns, along with plenty of other folks sharing incorrect or outdated advice about sales emails.

Therefore, I decided to make my latest video on tips for following-up when sending sales prospecting emails.

Watch the video below to find out what that the magic number of emails is.

I also explain why this number is what it is, along with some other tips that you can use to improve your follow-up emails so they don’t become repetitive or redundant.

Enjoy!

One of my new year’s resolutions is to create more video content, so I’m going to be making a lot more of them. I want to make these videos as useful to you as possible, so if you have questions you’d like to hear me answer or would like to request topics for future videos, please comment below and I’ll try to cover them in an upcoming video.

Happy Cold Emailing! 🙂
